MYSTERY DINNER THEATER
ON DELTA KING IN OLD SACRAMENTO
~ A HOWLING SUCCESS ~
Skalleagues & guests on the Delta King |
The Delta King Riverboat Hotel |
It was a picture-perfect Friday as 13 Skalleagues and guests gathered along the banks of the Sacramento River to partake in a delightful dinner-mystery theater and overnight on the majestic old Delta King Riverboat. Assembling for cocktails before dinner everyone anticipated a thrilling experience but might not have expected the uproariously humorous event which was to greet us. With much audience participation, one of our own soon became involved with the action, purring her way into the show and walking off with the best supporting actress "Oscar" for the evening. It was an extremely fun time, the music in the lounge following the show was terrific and the accommodations extremely comfortable. Jade Chapman who put this all together and who also provided the photos deserves great kudos for a terrific trip. Thank you, Jade.

SPRING SOJOURN TO HEARST CASTLE
AND PASO ROBLES WAS A WEEKEND TO REMEMBER
Eighteen members and friends of SKAL went to Paso Robles for a fabulous weekend March 27-29. Most of us boarded in San Jose and even with the train late, all were in good spirits and ready for a relaxing weekend. Karen Myers supplied doughnuts and coffee and some of us took the free DASH bus and went to town for breakfast. After a relaxing ride on the Coast Starlight we arrived in Paso Robles and were transferred to the Paso Robles Inn where we would stay 2 nights. A wine reception was held and then we all went to different restaurants on our own. Seven of us ladies went to "Cool Man Lukes" and had a wonderful dinner and lots of laughs. After about a 3 block walk back to the hotel we all went to bed early so we would be ready for the rough day ahead, which included wine tasting.
After breakfast we enjoyed the park across the street, it was lined with vendors and many unusual purchases were made. Then it was off to the first of four wineries. We were told on the way home had we drank all the tasting (which most of us did) we would have consumed 1 to 1 1/2 bottles of wine per person. At the 2nd winery the tour operator provided us with a wonderful box lunch which we consumed on the veranda. After much wine purchasing we were on the way home to rest before dinner. Than evening an Italian meal at Lombardi's was enjoyed by all.
Sunday morning we were up bright and early to start our ride to Highway 1, where we stopped at the Piedras Blancas Elephant Seal rookery. What fun to watch these huge seals pouring sand on themselves and playing with one another. There must have been hundreds of them, all females-moms and babies. The dads were in Alaska feeding. We then went to San Simeon and viewed the film on Hearst called "Building the Dream". Following the movie we began a walking tour of Casa Grande. Even though I had done this before, I always see and learn something new, what a fabulous place! A box lunch at San Simeon Beach was enjoyed by all, including the birds we fed. A short scenic tour of Cambria along with about an hours stop completed our tour. It was then back to the train station and our ride back home.
All in all a wonderful relaxing fun weekend. The beauty of these trips is the friendships we make, getting to know our fellow members away from a business environment. It is so rewarding and I hope more of you will take advantage and join us when we do another. Many thanks to Jade Chapman and Key Holidays for always giving us a weekend to remember.

SKÅL WEEKEND IN THE WINE COUNTRY
WAS A FUN EVENT FOR ALL
AT EMBASSY SUITES, NAPA

The autumn foliage was in full color and the grapes were all harvested. It was the perfect time of year to sample the fruits of the vine at several of the finest wineries and to relax in the warmth of Skal camaraderie. We visited three wineries, Chateau St. Jean, Ledson and Black Stallion and had a most elegant lunch at Della Santina's in Sonoma. We gathered the night before for some fun and amicale and an evening of pizza and wine, and Saturday concluded our day with a marvelous dinner in front of a roaring fireplace where we stayed at Embassy Suites Napa, as guests of Reynaldo Zertuche. It was a wonderful time to share friendships, and we look forward to our early April trip to Hearst Castle next year.

SKÅLLEAGUES GATHERED ON CLOSING DAY
OF BAY MEADOWS RACECOURSE
A DAY OF FUN,FESTIVITY & FINALITY
It was the final day of the County Fair thus signaling the final day for the running of the horses at the venerable bastion of horseracing the Bay Meadows Racecourse ... Slated to be demolished and replaced with a combination residential/commercial community, Sunday, August 17, 2008 was closing day, the end of an era. But that did not stop skallegues from gathering and enjoying a wonderful luncheon and an exciting day of horseracing. The second race was dedicated to Skal San Francisco, and, gathering at the winners circle above with winning Jockey Luis Rodrigues who had just brought "Mystery Hunter" to a successful win, are Skalleagues Jim Main, Nick Slovak,Terry Koenig, Sheila Hyman, Chris Spirandelli and Spud Hilton. Many guests were among our crowd including Martha Fink, Jerry Picolla, Marlis and Orin Holmes, all well known in the industry. This was the fifth year that we have had a summer outting at Bay Meadows. We will long remember them.
