MUCH EXCITEMENT FOR USA AT
THE SKAL WORLD CONGRESS
HELD IN BUDAPEST, HUNGARY
For nearly a decade, there has been no member from Skal USA on the Skal Executive Committee, but that came to an end with the first ballot win by Mok Singh, SI Los Angeles, over four competitors. John Rushak from SI New York won a position as Auditor. John was unopposed. The Congress was attended by two San Francisco Skalleagues, President Melita Thorpe and SIUSA Rep Jim Main. During the week there was much discussion between Budapest and San Francisco about twinning noting that both cities are known for their beautiful bridges, accentuating this year's theme, "bridging the cultures." Known as the Paris of Eastern Europe, Budapest is a magnificantly beautiful city, especially when lighted at night.

SAN FRANCISCO AT THE NAASC CONGRESS
HELD IN ANCHORAGE,ALASKA
MAY 7-10, 2009

Region III gathers with SIUSA Pres. Penner

Jim Main with Skål President Hulya Aslantas
The 48th NAASC Congress was held in the 49th state during its 50th Jubilee year of statehood. Anchorage Club rolled out the red carpet and displayed their best weather to welcome all visiting Skalleagues.
NAASC now stands for North American Alliance of Skal Clubs, and the Congress encapsulated the SIUSA Annual General Meeting as well as many regional meetings. Most of SIUSA's concernes dealt with balancing the budget and cutting costs which epitomizes the economy today. At the opening ceramonies, Skal President Hulya Aslantas mushed into the hall on a husky-pulled sled to everyone's amazement, which opened the week to stimulating discussions as to where Skal is going in the future. We either must solidify our common goals or perhaps go our own ways. This was President Aslantas' main concern, and her administration will be looking at this carefully, but our input is important.
Let's take a look at our own club as we ponder this question. Are our goals alligned with Skal's?
